Coventry Welsh 55 - 7 Coventrians

Another chapter in this so far, "difficult" season unfolded at Burbages Lane on Saturday as Covents, without 8 first team regulars (due to injury and work commitments) competed well up front and went in at half time 12 - 7 down with a Paul Brindley try, converted by Dougie. Unfortunately, the wheels detached somewhat in the second forty and we slumped to another heavy defeat. In stark contrast to last season's euphoric Saturdays, there are a few glum faces around the club at the moment for obvious reasons but that's rugby. We've got to take the rough with the smooth, say well done Cov Welsh and re-group. There is still a lot of spirit in the camp and we will come again.

Coventrians 2nds 14 - 20 Coventry Welsh 2nds

This was a good, cleanish, fairly even contest played in high wind. It was after about 10 minutes that I finally realised who the spunky, diminutive and nimble scrum half was. Yep, none other than Terry Mosey who at 52 stone and 18 and half years old (or is it the other way round?) rolled back the years and put in a virtuoso first half, reminiscent of Red in his last season.

The Covents pack was solid and experienced, 150 stone with a combined age of 400 (well they did have Hayden, Scholesy and Dick in there) but soon found themselves 5-0 down as the huge grey haired Welsh 2nd row distracted everyone with his cavernous builder's crack. Covents quickly took the lead though as Dewi Mosey, ignoring Dick's shout to stuff it up his jumper, threw out a long, spinning, precise pass (not reminiscent of Red) to Ben, (an outhouse like prop playing at 2nd row). He surged forward, sleying Wesh dragons and passing to Paul (guesting from Standard) watched him sprint in with a couple of sidesteps for good measure. Ben Davies added the conversion. Not to be outdone, Ben the prop playing at 2nd row scored the second (converted by Ben Davies) to take Covents into half time, leading 14-10.

The Welsh had the wind in the second half and periods of pressure and frequent baring of that 2nd Row's backside (pity his No 8) saw them touchdown after some slick passing and dodgy Covents tackling to go 20 - 14 up. At this point, Covents unleashed their main weapon, Deano, who came on with a stiff neck (he doesn't know who it belongs to) and proceeded to inject fire into the Covents bellies (too numerous to mention) and as we drove forward, ex player John Sullivan found himself yellow carded for skullduggery. He says it was a half hearted barge, Covents supporters say it was a vicious assault. Either way I was able to tap him up for the VP's do (8th November) while he served his 10 minutes - nice to see you btw John.

For all their Deano inspired huffing and puffing, Covents couldn't blow the Welsh house down and an enjoyable game ended in narrow defeat. Our thanks to the Cov Uni boys who made their debuts on Saturday, Ben, Dan etc (see you Monday lads) and also to the Standard guys who helped us out again - especially the ginger winger Tom, who although weighing less than Scholesy's left leg continued to hurl himself at the Welsh defence only to be mercilessly scragged time and time again.
